RARE McGinniss Turquoise (Nevada) Nugget/Chip Beads 4-6mm, 9 inch Strand
The McGinness turquoise area is located on the East slope of the Toiyabe Range in Lander County about 15 miles NorthEast of Austin. The McGinness mine, which was the first discovery in the area, was located in 1930. After the initial work, the property was purchased and worked on a small scale by George McGinness. This was done during the 1930s and 1940s. Later, it was worked on a much larger scale by mechanized equipment in the 1960s and 1970s. This larger scale operation occurred during the time when turquoise was at the height of popularity and prices were very high.
